Chailey St Peter’s Church is undergoing maintenance work in the way of a long awaited new floor. Ex Publican and now priest in charge Rev. Paul Mundy took his parishioners to the Five Bells in Chailey at 9am on Sunday 1st Feb 2026 for a full Sunday service including Holy Communion. In all some 50 local people turned out to witness this unique event.
The choir was in attendance along with an electric organ. Andy Rees, fabulous musician and organist, filled the pub with delightful, familiar sounds of church - a really spine tingling moment. Candles were lit and the service was taken in front of a French window looking out into the garden.
There were the usual readings and hymns followed by a blessing for the pub and a prayer for pubs in general in these hard times. Rev. Paul thanked the landlady Melle for her wonderful hospitality.
Parishioners were invited to stay for breakfast immediately after the service which nearly everyone stayed for. The chef prepared full English breakfasts and bacon butties for those who wanted. The five bells is open every weekend for breakfast from 9am.
Recently the landlord of the pub has teamed up with local farmer Peter French to ensure the pubs produce is being sourced as locally as possible, the roast dinners smelt amazing!
Whist the church refurbishment continues there will be another service in the pub on Sunday 1st March 2026 at 9am sharp. (Arrive before 8.45 for a good seat) father Martin will be preaching with his unique great humour, kindness and wit. We hope as many as possible can attend.
May make the trip down from Yorkshire for the next one !
